Extreme knitting is right!
I am guilty of sometimes reading only the patterns at Knitty, but in this most recent issue I read about knitting two socks at once. And I've decided that I could do it if I wanted to (I did knit a reversible double-knit hat for my mother), but I don't think I'll ever want to. It is crazy. I don't usually have a problem making a second sock, and I either don't care if they match exactly or manage to match them up pretty well separately. The progress when you're double knitting is slow, and I like to see as fast as possible how a new yarn or pattern is knitting up. When I knit the hat I used two different colors, but socks would use the same color, and that would make it very easy to confuse the two strands, which would just lead to unnecessary frustration. The article also mentions that guage loosens a bit when double knitting, and going down a needle size might be necessary. I already knit a lot of socks on size 1's and I don't own any 0's, and I don't think I want to. So it's been interesting to see what people can come up with, but I think I'll stick to one sock at a time for now.

An interesting fact about my doubleknit hat--I tried it on today and it fits better with the lighter side out. With the darker side out, it's almost too tight. Is that possible? Something to do with the construction?
That's too bad. Yes, it's the construction. One side I did with all knit stitches and the other side I did with all purl stitches. The trouble is, I can't remember which side I did which way. I think I knit the darker color and purled the lighter color based on the fact that the darker color was my cast on. You could try soaking the yarn and then letting the hat dry while stretched out over a plate or bowl or anything you can think of that would be OK to get damp, but I don't know how much that would accomplish. (I'd say keep the tight side inside if you're going to try this, so it gets the most stretch).
I could try again if you want. I have the leftovers, though I don't know if there's enough.
Nah, you don't need to try again (although if you want to try the Nora again, that would be nice). Maybe I should just get a really, really short haircut! (It's pretty long--yesterday I managed a French braid.)
I followed the link to knitty.com and went from there to Covet Central, and from there to Canadian Knitwear Designers & Artisans (www.canknit.com/gallery.html). Clicked on Gallery, clicked on the second photo from the left in the top row, and OMG that's a beautiful bag (www.canknit.com/gallery/hswerdlyk.html). And OMG that's a hefty price tag (US $332). (Not that it's not worth it.)
